Balance
Balance is the key to riding.  If you are overweight, it may take you longer to obtain consistent balance.  Overweight riders work longer and harder to find their center of balance.  It is harder for riders to maintain their balance when their weight is not evenly distributed across their entire body.  Having excess weight in any area can significantly affect a rider's balance.

 

Position
Riders must maintain correct positioning of legs, hands, and torso to effectively communicate with the horse.  Excess weight in the leg, especially the thigh, prevents the rider from achieving proper alignment in the saddle.  This can also cause interference with the tack, and instability in the saddle.
 

 

Stamina
All riders experience a different level of endurance and stamina.  Overweight riders may struggle to achieve an optimum level of strength and agility.  Stamina, strength, and agility are key components to riding in a safe, secure, effective manner.

 

The Horse
Of course, we must also consider the horse.  Although the horse is much bigger and stronger, the rider has a direct impact on their comfort and well-being.  Like us, horses have physical limitations based on conformation, breeding, age, and condition.  As we achieve our optimum weight and health, we can expect our horses to respond better to our aids and work with more comfort and willingness.
